FNOL: First Notification of Loss Handling

First notification of loss is the first call after an accident, and it sets the cost of everything that follows. Captured well, the case moves straight into repair and a replacement vehicle. Captured badly, it becomes a liability argument three months later. We handle FNOL for insurers, brokers and fleet operators, and move the case forward on the same call.

FNOL is treated as an admin step in a lot of operations. It is not. It is the only moment when the driver remembers the detail clearly, the scene is fresh, and evidence still exists.

Everything expensive about a motor claim traces back to what was or was not captured in that first conversation.

What is FNOL?

First notification of loss is the first report of an incident to the party who will handle it, whether that is an insurer, a broker, a fleet manager or an accident management provider. It is the point at which a claim formally begins.

A good FNOL captures what happened, who was involved, what evidence exists, and what the driver needs right now. A poor one captures a registration number and a vague description, and creates months of work.

Why the first call decides the cost

Three things are only reliably available in the first hours: the driver's clear recollection, contact details for witnesses, and photographic evidence of the scene and vehicle positions.

Miss those and liability becomes arguable. An arguable liability position means a longer hire period, a disputed claim, and a bill that grows. Getting the first call right is the cheapest intervention available in motor claims. Our post on the first hour after a non-fault accident covers what drivers should do at the scene.

What we capture

  • The incident. Date, time, location, road conditions, direction of travel and a clear account of what happened.
  • The parties. Driver and vehicle details for everyone involved, plus insurer details for the third party where available.
  • The evidence. Photographs, dash cam footage, witness details, and whether police attended.
  • The need. What the driver actually requires now, including whether they need a vehicle to keep working and what class it must be.

What happens next

We triage on the same call. The vehicle goes to a repairer or an engineer, the driver gets a replacement matched to what they drive, and the claim starts moving rather than sitting in a queue.

Where the driver is non-fault, the replacement runs as credit hire recovered from the at-fault insurer. Where you would rather control the cost directly, we can supply on direct hire under agreed terms instead.

Out of hours

Accidents do not respect office hours, and a driver stranded at eleven at night with no answer is where partner relationships are lost.

We handle out-of-hours contact so the first call is answered by someone who can act, not a voicemail promising a call back on Monday.

Who this is for

Insurers and brokers who want cleaner claims and fewer liability disputes. Fleet operators who need drivers back on the road rather than a claims process. Body repairers who take the first call from a customer and need somewhere to send them.

If any of that is a gap in your operation, our partner page covers how we work together, or get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

What does FNOL stand for?

First notification of loss. It is the first report of an incident to the party who will handle the claim, and the point at which the claim formally begins.

Why is FNOL important?

Because the driver's recollection, witness contact details and scene evidence are only reliably available in the first hours. Capture them and liability is clear. Miss them and liability becomes arguable, which lengthens the claim and increases the cost.

Does PurpleSquare handle FNOL out of hours?

Yes. Out-of-hours contact is answered by someone who can act on the case rather than take a message.

What happens after the first call?

We triage on the same call. The vehicle goes to a repairer or engineer and the driver gets a replacement vehicle matched to what they drive, either as credit hire recovered from the at-fault insurer or as direct hire under agreed terms.
