After a non-fault accident

Should I Accept the Other Driver's Insurer's Courtesy Car?

You do not have to accept it. When the at-fault driver's insurer offers you a courtesy car, it is a choice, not an obligation. PurpleSquare Hire supplies a like-for-like replacement instead, at no cost to you, with the hire recovered from that same insurer. The right answer depends on whether their car genuinely matches yours and whether you are happy for them to run your claim.

Do I have to accept the other insurer's courtesy car?

No. After a non-fault accident you are entitled to a replacement vehicle, but you choose who supplies it. The at-fault insurer's offer is one option. A credit hire company such as PurpleSquare Hire is another, and either way the cost ends up with that insurer, not with you.

What is insurer capture?

Insurer capture is the industry name for the at-fault insurer contacting you directly, often within hours, and offering to arrange your repair and a courtesy car. It is legal and sometimes convenient. The thing to remember is that the insurer is managing a claim it is paying for, so it has a reason to keep the vehicle, the repair and the hire period as cheap as possible.

When taking it can make sense

  • The car offered genuinely matches yours in size, transmission and fuel type.
  • You do not rely on your vehicle for work.
  • You are happy for that insurer to choose the repairer and run the claim.

When a like-for-like credit hire vehicle is the better choice

  • You drive a van, a larger car, an automatic, an EV or a plated taxi or PHV.
  • You need the vehicle to earn, so a smaller car means lost work.
  • You want your own representative dealing with the insurer, not the insurer dealing with you.

The standard to expect is set out on like-for-like replacement car, and the costs on will I have to pay.

Courtesy car versus credit hire at a glance

A courtesy car is usually whatever is available and runs while the repair is active. A credit hire vehicle is matched to your own and runs for the reasonable repair period, or until a fair settlement if your car is written off. The full comparison is in credit hire vs courtesy car.

Frequently asked questions

The other driver's insurer has offered me a courtesy car, should I take it?

Only if it genuinely matches what you need and you are comfortable with that insurer managing your repair and claim. You are not obliged to accept. PurpleSquare Hire can supply a like-for-like replacement instead, at no cost to you, recovered from the at-fault insurer.

What is insurer capture?

It is when the at-fault driver's insurer contacts you directly after an accident and offers to handle your repair, replacement vehicle and claim. It is legitimate, but the insurer is managing a claim it will pay for, so it has an interest in keeping costs down.

Will their courtesy car be like-for-like?

Sometimes, often not. Many offers are for a small hatchback regardless of what you drive. If you need a van, a seven-seater, an automatic, a plated taxi or an EV, check before you accept.

Can I say no after first saying yes?

In most cases you can move your claim if the vehicle or the service is not right. Talk to us first and we will tell you plainly whether we can take it on.

Does refusing affect my claim or my no-claims bonus?

No. Where the accident was not your fault, your claim is against the other driver's insurer either way, and using credit hire does not go through your own policy, so your excess and no-claims bonus are unaffected.
